Special Education Needs

A couple of years after having started the school, our Founder wanted to contribute towards society. A visit to The Lady Irwin School seeded in her the idea to do something for the specially abled children. She earnestly felt that it was imperative to provide specially abled children with facilities and opportunities that were at par with what was being offered to other children.

Our SEN Department now comprising of 3 sections, began in April 1995 and has a strength of 30 students who are ably taken care of by a team of 14 professionals.

We firmly believe that each and every child is educable and that early intervention in case of our Special children, can have a big impact towards them leading normal, self-sufficient lives. We strive to provide a nurturing and loving environment for differently abled children and work towards integrating them in mainstream classes -- for instance the performing arts activities.

We have children with Down's Syndrome, CP, children with problems belonging to the Autism Spectrum (Aspergers and Fragile X Syndrome). A couple of children with Rett’s Syndrome have also passed out from our school.

An Individual Education Plan (IEP) is drawn up for each child. This is a collaborative effort on part of the Special Educators, Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists and the child's caregiver. These IEP's are reviewed on a regular basis to monitor the progress of the child and are reformulated as and when needed. The classrooms in the SEN Department are equipped to give the children a happy yet stimulating and caring environment. Prestigious institutions and hospitals send children to us on a regular basis. We have a very dedicated staff focused in our goal of equipping these children to be valued members of the society.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy helps the children work towards their Developmental Goals such as

1) Gross and Fine Motor Skills
2) Social and Emotional Skills
3) Visual and Perceptual Skills
4) Executive Functioning
5) Motor Planning and Sensory Integration

Our experts help children with a wide range of developmental challenges by providing support which is tailored to their specific needs and goals . Our Occupational Therapists draw upon a variety of tools, equipment and strategies to develop a programme for each student.

The Occupational Therapists, in collaboration with the speech and language therapists, special educators, physiotherapists and teachers, create an "Inclusive Learning Friendly Environment" ( ILFE ) which enhances each student's potential for learning.

We cater to CROSS DISABILITIES such as, ADHD, Cerebral Palsy, ASD, Cerebral Visual Impairment, Hearing Impairment, Epilepsy, GDD (Gross Developmental Delay), Specific Learning Disabilities, Down Syndrome etc

Speech and Language Therapy

Our Speech and Language Therapists/ Pathologists provide assessment and therapy to children with speech and Language disorders such as

- Misarticulation
- Stammering
- Voice Disorders
- Delayed Speech Language development with ASD, ADHD/ ADD, CP, Down's Syndrome, etc

As children with special needs have communication issues, our speech and language Therapists work along with the teachers and other professionals to develop the Augmentative & Alternative Communication (ACC) program for the child. This facilitates the development of communication abilities. They are taught to express themselves through Picture Book Communication (PBC) and theme pages.
